Seven Guidelines for Mentors

  1. Every mentoring relationship is unique, so be open to how you can assist your mentee.
  2. Encourage your mentee to clearly state his/her goals, expectations and needs.
  3. Evaluate your mentee’s needs and communicate what you can realistically offer.
  4. Make yourself available for meetings and calls. Based on prior program surveys, most matches meet in-person once a month.  Try to honor your pre-arranged meetings, and communicate if your schedule changes.
  5. Be honest and thoughtful when providing feedback.
  6. Maintain confidentiality within the mentoring relationship.
  7. Commit to the mentoring relationship for the eighteen-month program term.
